A native Mexican plant, poinsettias were named after Joel R. Poinsett, U.S. ambassador to Mexico who brought the plant to Americain1828.
Poinsettias were likely used by Mexican Franciscans in their 17th century Christmas celebrations.
One legend has it that a young Mexican boy, on his way to visit the village Nativity scene, realized he had no gift for the Christ child.
He gathered pretty green branches from along the road and brought them to the church. Though the other children mocked him, when the leaves were laid at the manger, a beautiful star-shaped flower appeared on each branch.
The bright red petals, often mistaken for flowers, are actually the upper leaves of the plant.

We learn something new every day

Interesting Christmas Card Facts from Woodlands junior school....

In 1846 1000 cards, with the same design as the first Christmas cards, were sold to the public at 1 shilling each by Felix Summerly's Treasure House in Bond street.

Postmen in Victorian England were popularly called "robins" because their uniforms were red.
Victorian Christmas cards often showed a robin delivering Christmas mail.

In the nineteenth century, the British Post Office used to deliver cards on Christmas morning.
The first Christmas stamp was released in Canada in 1898.

Want more interesting Christmas facts then please do visit HERE Woodlands junior school where I am sure you will learn something new....
for instance I didn't know we had a 'Stirup Sunday' at least I didn't know it had a name.... do you know what this tradition is?
